Charles Boutin

  • Executive Director | Management Team

You don’t have to wait until you have complete control of a situation before taking action. You must jump in and then adjust your course. Progress and innovation would not exist if people didn’t take risks that could lead to failure.

Charles Boutin is passionate about business, investment and entrepreneurship and he has honed his understanding of the environment and issues faced by companies because he was recently a director and shareholder of an SME. This entrepreneurial experience allowed him to make a successful first entry and exit.

He has been an active investor in private placement and venture capital for major Quebec companies for more than 15 years. During this time, he has invested over $600 million primarily in SMEs, medium and large companies in the industrial sector. When he began to focus on business development, he worked on several success stories through investments with the Société Générale de Financement (SGF), Investissement Québec (IQ) and the Fonds de solidarité FTQ (FSTQ). His approach has always centred on acting as an advisor for company leaders when it comes to developing their strategic plan or sourcing growth opportunities.

The first chapter of Charles Boutin’s career was as an engineer in the engineering and construction sector. His first project was the Kiewit construction of the LG1 plant in James Bay. Later, driven by his passion for business, he moved to corporate finance and became Senior Account Manager at RBC. He continued his career at the FSTQ head office where he concluded several transactions with regional manufacturing companies. While at the FSTQ, he launched Solifor, an investment fund specializing in forest asset management, identified targets and concluded acquisition transactions worth over $20 million.

In 2008, he accepted the role of Investment Director at SGF, which became IQ following the merger of the two organizations. He oversaw projects that involved large-scale expansion and growth by acquisition or transfer of ownership. During this period, he was also responsible for business development for the manufacturing sector. These varied functions in the field of investment allowed him to analyze the business models of several hundred companies across Quebec.

Charles Boutin has an engineering background, a graduate diploma (DESS) in engineering management and an MBA from HEC Montréal with a specialization in finance. He has served on over a dozen boards of directors and participated in sectoral committees in the manufacturing, engineering, forestry and renewable energy sectors.

He specializes in:

  • Business development
  • Strategic planning
  • Governance
  • Contingency strategy
  • Financial strategy
  • Growth through acquisitions
